Metonymy Goes Cognitive-linguistic 1. from Structuralist Semantics to Cognitive Linguistics

چکیده
1. From Structuralist Semantics to Cognitive Linguistics When Roman Jakobson pulled metaphor and metonymy to the center of the stage in linguistics and poetics, structuralists were trying to account for meaning by means of a componential model of clearly defined semantic elements (Jakobson, "Closing Statement"). Inspired by the success of Vladimir Propp's structuralist narratology, which attempted to account for story structure by means of a limited set of plot ingredients, and by structuralist phonology, which was able to characterize the various phonemes of language by means of a limited set of sound primitives and their combinations, structuralist semanticists set out to develop a similar approach for word meaning. This proved to be a difficult task. Here is Jonathan Culler's account of the problems raised by the approach advocated by A. J. Greimas:

The cognitive linguistics of incongruity resolution: Marked reference-point structures in humor
Previous research in cognitive semantics has focused on various mechanisms of ‘dynamic’ meaning construction, like metaphor, metonymy, conceptual integration, irony and sarcasm. The present paper aims at broadening the scope of analysis to include the largely underfranchised topic of humor (in the broadest sense) in the cognitive paradigm. In a first section of the paper, it is argued that Crof...
متن کاملDynamic Categorization of Semantics of Fashion Language: A Memetic Approach
Categories are not invariant. This paper attempts to explore the dynamic nature of semantic category, in particular, that of fashion language, based on the cognitive theory of Dawkins’ memetics, a new theory of cultural evolution. Semantic attributes of linguistic memes decrease or proliferate in replication and spreading, which involves a dynamic development of semantic category. More specific...
متن کاملWhat’s behind meaning?
The paper addresses the main questions to be dealt with by any semantic theory which is committed to provide an explanation of how meaning is possible. On one side the paper argues that the resources provided by the development of mathematical logic, theoretical computer science, cognitive psychology, and general linguistics in the 20th Century, however indispensable to investigate the structur...
متن کاملQuantitative Approaches to Metonymy
Introduction Recent years have witnessed an upsurge of interest in metonymy. From cognitive to computational linguistics, researchers have finally realized that metonymy is ubiquitous in everyday language and that it constitutes an important focus of research. In cognitive linguistics, this has given rise to detailed studies of metonymy as a cognitive phenomenon (Kövecses and Radden, 1998; Peir...
